Understanding a community's past and identifying places and spaces that enrich the life of residents begins through a thorough survey to research and document the community's landscape. The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) outlines a process to conduct historic surveys in a methodical way to serve as a basis for future historic preservation efforts, including designation at the federal, state, and/or local levels. Join SHPO staff to discuss the importance of this integral community planning tool and what you need to know before getting started.
